Librarian's Review
Two years later Omakayas is nine. As in the previous book, this one takes place over the course of one year and witnesses the events of the Sandy Lake Tragedy of 1850, during which 400 Ojibwe died while awaiting their annual government payment. Omakayas also matures and learns of her special powers. The author’s magical descriptions of the people’s relationship to and stewardship for their lands heightens the later tragedy of their forced relocation westward into their enemy’s territory (Dakota Sioux).
